1. Just read ISIS has been encountering heavy resistance at Samarra. Iraqi counteroffensive with airstrikes. That’s where the Golden Dome mosque is located, which AQI bombed in 2006 (I think it’s the holiest shrine for Shiites), so the gov’t is making a stand to prevent that from falling. al-Maliki is also quietly asking the U.S. gov’t for air support. We’ll see what happens over the next couple of days. Praying for this to turn around…

   Not to mention Muqtada al-Sadr (remember him?) is helping to form Shiite militias that are on their way to Samarra. Hoping and praying this doesn’t become Syria 2.0.

2. I am just wondering out loud here…al-Malki is a Shiite and Iran is possibly involved behind the scenes…would this give the excuse Iran needs to invade Iraq under the guise of “military assistance” to the Shiite government against the insurgents?

   Iran is watching this very very closely. The Iraqi government is now essentially a proxy of Iran. The Shia’ stronghold is in the south. If the insurgents made their way to Baghdad, I think that Iran would be forced to get involved, however it would likely be done more clandestinely. However, because Baghdad is their home turf, the Iraqi soldiers would let Baghdad fall as they did Mosul. Mosul was a Sunni stronghold. But if things got bad, Iraq would no doubt seek Iranian help. As far as a full blown Iranian war, my guess is this would be further down the road and relate not only to Iraq, but also to Syria and Lebanon. Time will tell.

6. I work with a bunch of folks in the military…Iraq is probably going to have a more full blown civil war and will end up splitting up in three or so countries. The biggest issue is the South will belong to Iran who will then threaten the Saudi Oil fields. Saudi Arabia could not hold on to their country without the United States. I wonder what will happen since Obama seems to be letting events take their course and has retreated from the ME. I think that part of the plan might be the AQ aligned groups trying to take down the royal family while Iran sweeps in and takes the oil fields. Crazy stuff.

7. Do you think turkey might get involved in the north? I could see turkey and iran coming to some sort of agreement dividing Iraq between them with turkey gaining hegemony over Sunnis in north and iran Shia in the south. If that happens we have the makings of the beast in Rev 13.

9. I think you are right Joel…for instance, we could see Turkey come in to try to save the Saudi family. Iran wants the oil fields in Southern Iraq and SA. Iran actually has to import gas because they cannot meet their economic needs. This is part of what the Iran and Iraq war was about (along with uniting with their Shiite brothers). The interesting thing is that AQ hates the Saudi Rulers more than they hate the Jews or USA. I wonder if they kill them and then create a destabilization of the country and Iran sweeps in. Pretty wild stuff. This is part of the reason the West supported Iraq and Saddam in the 1980’s.

10. I dont think this is off topic.

    While seeing on the news that people are being crucified, I was reminded of an article I read, but cant remember where, the writer quoted rev 11v8

    And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where ALSO our Lord was crucified.

    It was suggested that the also implied that the two wittnesses were actually crusified, or John could have just said, that great city where our Lord was crusified, with out the also.
    Just an observation.
