On Jan. 31, immediately after revolution broke out in the Middle East, I predicted that the end result would be anything but a grand victory for Western-style secular democracy. Instead, pro-Shariah law and pro-caliphate groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood would emerge as the greatest winners. Glenn Beck’s similar warnings stirred up the usual suspects from the left, but also stirred up the institutional neoconservative hornet’s nest with Weekly Standard editor and Fox News analyst Bill Kristol mocking Beck’s comments as the “rants” of a hysterical and unhealthy individual. The New York Times’ David Brooks upped the ante, calling Beck’s comments, “delusional ravings about the caliphate coming back.”
